Part-time Community Center Grounds Keeper

Salary - $13.03 per hour

General Function: 
  • Under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, this position includes landscaping, planting, mowing and Community Center maintenance.
  • The work is semi-routine in nature, although the employee may be required to make judgments as to the appropriate action to take in similar situations according to established policies and procedures.
Essential Duties: 
  • Manages and maintains trees, shrubs and flowers.
  • Designs flowerbeds.
  • Oversee and maintain flowerbeds at four different City entrances.
  • Inspects vehicles and equipment to insure safe and proper working conditions and performs operator maintenance checks on all vehicles and equipment used in horticulture activities.
  • Acquires materials and supplies for various landscape maintenance jobs.
  • Complies with established work and safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs light custodial services as needed mostly during off season (winter months).
  • Performs duties with frequent interruptions.
  • Work with the beautification committee throughout the year on different projects and events in an effort to beautify the City.
  • Basic care and maintenance of the Women's Veterans Monument located in Patriot Park.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimal Acceptable Qualifications: 
  • Ability to develop and implement an effective program to assure a well-kept and attractive appearance in Patriot Park and the Community Center grounds.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques commonly used in horticultural activities.
  • Ability to maintain the City's greenhouse.
  • Ability to operate, and care for, a variety of equipment, including mowers.
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to operate a zero-turn mower.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and physically demanding manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to identify problem pests and to measure, mix and properly apply chemicals relating to insect and weed control.
  • Ability to use a respirator when required. Insures all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), OSHA and State Department of Health rules and regulations are complied with.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to explain, departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of good safety practices, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver License and driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Ability to work ocassionally evenings and weekends as required.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
Additional Desirable Qualifications: 
  • Experience in Municipal Park maintenance.
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in groundskeeper and landscape gardening.
Supervision Given and Received: 
  • Work is often done independent of close supervision but is subject to review and direction by the Recreation Supervisor and formal review by the Assistant to City Manager.
Education and Experience: 
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
