LEGAL SECRETARY / ASSISTANT

Salary Range $36,545.60 - $48,963.20

General Function: 

This position reports directly to the City Attorney. The Legal Secretary/Assistant is required to assist the City Attorney in providing legal services to the City of Del City.

Essential Duties: 
  • Responsibilities include preparation of preliminary correspondence and pleadings, maintaining electronic files database, calendaring/docketing case related deadlines, and submitting state, administrative and federal court filings. 
  • Handling of incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Ability to prioritize projects and multi-task.
  • Assists City Attorney by researching, investigating facts and preparing legal documents.
  • Gathers research data for use as evidence, to formulate defense, or to initiate legal action.
  • Prepare dockets for Court and update progress on each case.
  • Assists in Court, as required.
  • Prepares legal papers and correspondence, such as summonses, complaints, motions, answers, discovery, subpoenas, etc.
  • May file documents, pleadings and briefs with Court Clerk and administrative agencies.
  • Review law journals and other legal publications, as assigned, to identify court decisions pertinent to pending cases and submit articles to City officials.
  • Makes, maintains and prepares status reports, dockets, calendars, scheduling, planning and general preparations.
  • Performs various functions in document preparation, retention and retrieval including word processing, transcribing, records keeping, filing and copying.
  • Compiles and maintains litigation files.
  • Medical record and medical billing chronologies.
  • Create table of authorities and table of contents.
  • Understanding of rules related to state and federal filings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimal Acceptable Qualifications: 
  • Prior experience as a legal secretary/assistant.
  • Career professional with applicable advanced training and/or very significant legal field experience.
  • Excellent proofreading and organization skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively.
  • Must be familiar with legal terminology, procedures and documents.
  • Good interpersonal, typing, word processing, computer and organizing skills.
  • Clear and effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of business English, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and arithmetic.
  • A strong work ethic and eagerness to learn and to stay current in the field.
  • Demonstrated qualities of confidentiality, responsibility, dependability, reliability, initiative and judgment.
  • Neat, professional appearance.
Additional Desirable Qualifications: 
  • Prefer applicable advanced training in the skills and legal areas, but very significant legal field experience and effective on-the-job training will be acceptable.
  • High School diploma or equivalent, college preferred.

 

Supervision Given and Received: 

This is a non-supervisory position. It operates under the direct supervision of the City Attorney.

 

Education and Experience: 
  • Prefer applicable advanced training in the skills and legal areas, but very significant legal field experience and effective on-the-job training will be acceptable.
  • High School diploma or equivalent, college preferred.
